While taking a course that included poetry two years ago, I came to appreciate how important it is to express yourself eloquently using a minimum of words.  Though I rarely write my own poetry except when I have to, the opportunity to change that came my way through two different media over a single weekend:  A book of exercises in poetry, written by people who teach it, and poetry refrigerator magnets.  I have found that it’s best not to question the universe when it keeps making its desires known to me.

During a day of feeling philosophical,
I came to the realization
I’m not done yet.

There have been unknown expectations,
that felt right to me at the time:
The “must have’s”, the “got to’s”, that other people say.

But I must do things in my own way,
as she does things that are true for her,
to find my place in the world.

I have been hurt,
briefly diverted.
“Where am I supposed to be?”

Now I long for
celebration and relaxation.
So I’ll pour myself a glass,
sit back and recognize
my worth.
