MY WRITER’S JOURNAL Sept. 22/17 – Workshops and Revelations

They don’t call them workshops for nothing. They truly are a lot of work. Some days I wonder why I do all the things I do to be known as a writer. It seems like I’m always complaining about some aspect of it that has nothing to do with the actual writing of my novel. Yet, the other night, I came to realize that I actually enjoy all the exciting, wonderful things I do get to do that have nothing to do with writing. A friend once said, “Have fun” when I was making things harder than they need to be. She’s right. What I really love about creating a workshop is the people I get to work with and the back and forth motion of ideas that can, and do, spark a revelation. It’s so exciting. Why the other night I had a revelation of my own that hit me to the point that it caused a physical reaction as though I’d been hit. These moments are rare and hard won, but so worth the effort. What I teach, I also learn. For me, it doesn’t get any better than that.
